Ok so Venice is amazing but after about a month in we decided to venture out and start seeing the amazing country we are living in instead of just the city! We planned to take one big day trip to Verona but when we got there a spontaneous decision was made to take a detour to Lake Garda as it really is not that far from Verona and why not kill two birds with one stone?! To get to Verona we booked the Flixbus from the Tronchetto station in Venice and it only cost about 5/6 euros each way, how good is that? That is like 4 pound, you definitely would not get that in England! Then the coach dropped us at Verona train station so we got the train to Lake Garda from there. This was only 5 euros each way and was only about a 20 minute journey. Then it is literally just a walk down a hill and you are on the lake.
I definitely think this is the best detour I have ever taken, it really is like a picturesque postcard. It was still early when we got there so the mountains were a bit unclear but that did not take away anything from the beautiful scenery. We obviously only got to see one small side of the Lake so I am definitely planning on taking a trip back there and seeing a whole lot more of it!
We walked around and found a sort of stone walk way which goes into the Lake so we sat there for a while enjoying the heat! There was a small patch of sand near the part we were on and there were a load of pedalos chained up so it looks as if you can rent them out when there is someone around. Then we wandered around the docks and walked over to the lighthouse and back. After this we took a walk, well more like a hike, up to the castle. Which I kid you not was the steepest hill I have ever seen, it was almost vertical I'm sure. By this point it was pretty obvious that my choice to wear block heel sandals was totally naïve...
It was sooooo worth it once we got to the castle though because look at these views, it is such a beautiful place with such a weirdly calming atmosphere to all the bits of the town I saw. We had a look round the castle which was pretty cool but it was closing really early so we did not have as much time there as we liked. But just seeing the Lake from the rooftops of these creatively coloured houses was enough.
Then we just had a walk through the streets and some of our group went to see one of the small villages attached to the Lake, but being the massive literature student that I am I really wanted to get to Verona before the Juliet house museum closed. I know I will be back to see it properly though so no love lost. Then it was back to Verona!
